Our Story

The Eastbourne & District Chinese Association brings Chinese culture to British and Chinese born residents alike.

Art is a cultural necessity rather than a luxury for this society with dance, Karoake, music, Mah Jong, Cantonese and Mandarin all part of the cultural mix.
As the Chinese New Year is such an important cultural event the Association wanted to share it with the whole town.

The Chamber of Commerce is delighted to have been working with the Chinese Association and raised thousands of pounds to help make the 2019 Chinese New Year a very special and colourful community event.

Chinese residents are welcome at Hampden Park Community Centre in Eastbourne for Chinese language classes, karoake and Mah Jong, as well as dance and music workshops with participants aged from 8 to 88.
Art is a means of reconnecting the Chinese community to its cultural roots as Association secretary Jenny Wan explains:

“We have many young people in our community who know little about Chinese Arts and culture. We call them “BBC” (British Born Chinese) and we are very keen to make sure that they know as much as they can about Chinese arts and culture.”

One of the more unusual Arts activities the group does is the Unicorn Dance, a rare form of Chinese dance , found only among the Hak Gar dialect people in China.

Most of the association’s committee members are Cantonese speakers, with their origins in Hong Kong but the group  welcomes all and Chinese lessons in particular are popular with white Britons.

Kevin Tsang, Association Chair believes "These activities are vital to the community and so we have worked hard with the Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce to bring this colourful Chinese New Year celebration to the town."

President Richard Garland said "We wanted to cement our relationship with the active Chinese community in East Sussex and so we are delighted to be collaborating with the Chinese Association on this major new event for the town.

"It is more important than ever that we develop business links with China and we are hugely grateful to the Chinese Association for their help."

Chief Executive, Christina Ewbank explained "Eastbourne is a successful seaside destination all year round and so this massive Chinese New Year Celebration Parade is another great reason to visit the town.

"We have professional Chinese entertainers visiting from all over the UK to perform with children from local schools who will burst onto our streets in a riot of colour.

"Don't miss this exciting event."
